Derby as a city has had a major impact on the rest of England. Indeed, the area has played a notable part in the political history of Britain. Derby was one of two seats gained in 1900 by the newly formed Labour Representation Committee. Derby is also the cultural centre for the deaf community in the United Kingdom because of the strong use of sign language in the community and is home to the Royal School for the Deaf.  Significantly, the number of deaf residents in Derby is three times higher than the national average for Britain.

For those interested in sport, the Pride Park Stadium, home to Derby County F.C. is open to visitors. Residents are also able to take part in the Derwent Rowing Club activities. Wildlife such as owls and kingfishers can be spotted in the local parks. Indeed, the area has a number of parks; Darley, Derwent, Markeaton and Allestree Park are all popular. Gardening enthusiasts will be interested to know that Derby is home to the first park in the country to have an arboretum.

Derby was officially classed as a city on the 7 June 1977, on Queen Elizabeth II’s twenty fifth anniversary of her ascension to the throne. Despite swelling in size since the seventeenth century, Derby still has a sense of community. Today Derby’s population is estimated to be 229,407 with the city having 233,700 inhabitants (as of the 2001 census). This makes Derby the eighteenth largest settlement in England.
